I lived with this hunger long before the Hail Mary. This is nothing new. I’m fine.
Right up until Rocky asks another question.
“When last time you touch other human person skin, question?”
Oh. Oh no. “When I… a few days after I first woke up here.”
Rocky starts to relax for a split second, but then tightens when something occurs to him.
“Grace crewmates dead when you wake up. You said this, statement. You not even know your own name, remember nothing, see dead bodies, confirm?”
I nod, because if I open my mouth I will gag.
“When last time Grace touch ALIVE human person, question.”
I swallow thickly. I don’t answer aloud because I know Rocky can hear the hitch in my breath. My stomach churns with fresh bile. He senses my vital signs tick over into stress patterns and goes very, very still again.
“Grace. When last time, question.”
I clench my jaw so hard my temples ache, and beg him with my eyes to just stop.
“Grace. Please say not when… when Evil Stratt humans put you to sleep.”
I can taste grass.

"Many stages in Eridian reproductive process. Rocky Adrian laying cycles finally sync up recently. So, Rocky Adrian think finally time for eggs. Adrian lay five eggs, very good. Only, strange thing happen. Rocky only lay one egg."
“Oh,” I say. “That’s unusual, right?”
"Very," Rocky hums.
My throat tightens. "Does that mean there's something wrong? Are you sick?"
Rocky makes a gesture I usually interpret as "not exactly". "Not sick," he says. "But doctors still worry. When Eridian start to make fewer eggs, this usually means laying period of life is over soon. Rocky very young for this. Rocky supposed to be in ideal time of life for laying. Rocky younger than Adrian, even." He shifts on three of his feet. Already, my mind is racing ahead, wondering -- "Doctors told Rocky to ask Grace, is this radiation side effect, question?"

James "Rocky" Rockwell has to leave his dream job at NASA due to an episode he would rather not speak about. He moves to San Fransisco to begin his new career, and stops at a little diner on the way to his new apartment. There, he sees someone incredibly familiar, though they have never met before.
Not in this lifetime, at least.Memories come flooding back to Rocky of an entirely different life he lived. The universe has given him the chance to reunite with the person he holds closest to his heart. And the one who is currently holding him up on the diner floor, telling someone that he needs an ambulance. Rocky grips the sleeve of his cardigan, calls Grace's name, and Grace holds onto him tighter.

Summary
After the star eater solution has finally been implemented the world takes a collective moment to live without peril. Meetings are postponed, public offices are shut down, and events are rescheduled.
Rocky and Adrian find themselves with their first day at home together since Rocky has gotten back. And with Grace making promising growth in their recovery, but also required to spend a lot of time resting, Rocky is feeling a lot better about devoting their focus towards their mate for the next several hours. They sincerely hope they don't have to be the one to explained to Grace that "laying eggs next to each other" had been a generous euphemism like "sleeping together" or "Knowing one another."
