“I guess I shouldn’t be surprised. You are the only Hearthian that I know of to have flown their ship into the sun more times than I have fingers on my hand.”
You scramble out of your sleeping bag. This was definitely new. Not only was their dialogue off script– you wince slightly, surprised you thought of their actions in such a callous manner– but they seem to know about events they couldn’t possibly have witnessed.
“What did you say? You remember?”

Grian emitted a low, exasperated grumble from the back of his throat.
“The ocean doesn't seem to be feeling particularly generous lately,” he said, perhaps exaggerating his frustration, but a slight note of truth still sounded clear through his curt tone. Scar shifted his eyes to Grian’s, his expression shifting to one of playful teasing.
“But I thought you were saying that the ocean provides!” Scar raised his eyebrows expectantly.
Grian replied dryly.
“I’m starting to think the ocean doesn’t like me very much.”

Summary
Sometimes he’d overhear his spouse talking about him to the other bachelors. “He’s right back to square one,” they’d say, tutting. Or, “he’s never going to get better,” they’d sigh. It sent Shane into a full panic. He’d cancelled his therapy appointments and ran straight back to Marnie, sobbing into her arms and begging her not to tell anyone about it (though he was sure that half of the town already knew what a wreck he was).
His self-worth plummeted into a hole that slowly filled up with empty cans and empty promises. He’d tell the farmer he hadn’t been drinking, and they’d reward him by telling him how much they loved him. Something he no longer heard often enough to believe. He wondered if he was believable, but then he began to believe that he wasn’t worth believing in the first place.
[AKA: Shane's in an abusive relationship with the farmer (not gendered) and they're planning to divorce him. His mental health plummets.]

Summary
Hermit’s Hollow was a quiet town where you learned to ignore whisperings of nonsense and the dull, persistent feeling of being watched before you learned to ride a bike. To call it pedestrian would be a great disservice to all the terrible oddities occupying it— folks and legends alike.
Not that Grian believed any of them, of course.
Or; There's something wrong in Hermit's Hollow. There's something wrong with Grian. Neither of these are a surprise to him.
