Arthurs looks up. They had half sat on the table and their knees were touching. Faces oddly close. Merlin reaches over, the sword is in between Arthur legs, over his lap. Merlin does not seem particularly aware of this as he rounds the Kings hand with his own, his knuckles completely press against---
“Long,” Merlin added.
Arthur was drunk, of course, that’s why the brush of another body against his crotch was getting him work up.
This was wrong.
The hand presses down as his friend twists their hands together, “You like it, Arthur?”
It could not be. It wasn't. It was the wine, Arthur nodded, trying to swallow. He looked up, regretted immediately but was incapable of looking away. Merlin cheeks were red, his mouth open, wet and plush, blue eyes hooded as he stared down at their joint hands.AKA: Arthur and Merlin keep ending up in bed together but only as best friends, as long as they don't kiss, it doesn't count.

Summary
As Prince Regent, Arthur can finally start to break away from the hold his father has on him. He takes the Knights of the Round Table and Merlin on a diplomatic trip to Gawant and insists on keeping Merlin close throughout. Merlin has no idea why he's been so insistent on his presence, but he's not complaining. Arthur just wants him closer — sharing a bed has to be close enough, right?
