Summary
"Have you ever been dissatisfied with your body?" Blade spares him no more glances, leaving the appraisal up to Dan Heng.
Dan Heng, however, has no urge to peer down at himself. "I try not to dwell. Dissatisfactions can be changed."
Blade huffs a laugh. "Take advantage of that while you can." He regards the healed skin of his forearm, blazing eyes against his cold face. "Don't mistake this for self-pity. I have my own plans. Flesh that refuses to obey shall be punished."
Dan Heng's gaze, too, follows the mangle of Blade's forearm down to his impaired hands. His craftsman's legacy burns bright to this day and that is enough evidence that he's capable of forging with any tool he holds, sword or hammer.
"I trust you so long as you trust yourself."
The comment was weighted with enough intimacy to at last seize Blade's concentration.
Dan Heng visits Blade, who is awaiting his funeral after Fulwish's defeat. He decides that the best way of communicating to Blade about all of his convoluted feelings is to fuck him.

Summary
Blade doesn't lean forward, doesn't follow the touch. If Jing Yuan wants to play games, so be it.
"You have no one but yourself to blame, failing to conceal such secrets."
"Is that so?"
He's roughly turned around, inducing a dizziness that echoes delightfully in the empty hallways of Blade's mind. The pressure of Jing Yuan's calloused fingers on his forearms tingles through him, a measured coarseness interlaced with tenderness. It's safe— a feeling Blade doesn't care for and doesn't desire, but is somehow forced to experience everytime he's here. Maybe Jing Yuan can't help but make others feel safe.
There's the clink of metal against metal, and then metal against skin. Blade relishes the way it digs into the bone of his wrist.
"You are under arrest," Jing Yuan whispers into his ear, playful air tainted by darker intent.
Blade's deliberate disobedience comes with consequences he intends to suffer— except for the one consequence he failed to predict.

“Good. Stay away,” Blade’s gravelly voice is sour and dry.
But Blade begins to shiver once more in the few seconds they spend apart, his flesh always craving to drag them both down into shared purgatory. The grip on his sword falters when his fingertips harrow with frostbite once more. Metal clangs to the ground. Blade’s lips stubbornly try to hide the quiver overtaking. He reeks of pride.
“You need me. It’s best you don’t deny it,” Dan Heng’s tone turns commanding, coming naturally to him in a way he can’t describe.
On a freezing planet where they’ve crossed paths, Blade suffers from hypothermia, and Dan Heng has a solution.

“Are you just going to…” Blade struggles to find the words while flowers sprout within his chest, piercing every organ in a veil of thorns. “...sit here, until you wither away?”
Jing Yuan lifts his head, defeated. “What else am I meant to do?”
Blade dares not glance at the sky.
Instead, his gaze remains fixed on the near-corpse before him. No longer a general, no longer a father. Just… Jing Yuan.
As fate foretold, Nanook’s legions have launched a devastating, wide-scale attack across the universe. Several factions fall into war’s clutches and dissipate into nothingness, leaving the cosmos vulnerable to total annihilation.
Two remain. They are forced to have nothing but each other.

Summary
“I apologize, but you need to undress,” Jing Yuan says. He keeps his hands behind his back like he’s afraid of them jumping out somehow.
Blade doesn’t think of the implications; that the person in front of him, someone who is practically a stranger, requested of him something so uncouth. There was a point of living where shame no longer mattered. He only wishes the stench of iron and the clumps of blood clinging to his every crevice would dissipate.
Even if Blade tried to undress, his hands wouldn’t let him. Nerves lay forever damaged in his fingers, causing his numb hands to shake and feebly grasp at the stained fabrics around his chest. The weight of seven centuries engulfs him in its exhausting embrace.
“Help me, then,” Blade requests.
Blade gives Jing Yuan an unconventional visit after a mission gone wrong. Remembering too much or nothing at all— what is worse?

Summary
For a long time- a minute, perhaps, though that ought not to be a long time by either of their standards- Dan Heng does not speak. His gaze searches the horizon. Blade does not know what for. Perhaps, for a Nameless, there is meaning in the searching itself.
When he finds his words, they are painstakingly direct. Blade turns at the sound of his voice, but Dan Heng remains staring into the distance as he speaks. "I wish… we had learned sooner that we didn't have to be enemies."
I feel the same, Blade cannot say. "There was never-"
"I know," Dan Heng says, too quickly. His voice softens again, as if he'd caught himself off-guard, too. "I just wish we had, at the very least, been afforded the opportunity."

Blade’s hands twitch. The mark on Dan Heng’s bottom lip catches at the light, still wet and slow-seeping red. Sometime during his ministrations he’d caught it between his teeth and split it open again. Unthinking, Blade reaches out and up and runs the pad of his thumb across it.
Dan Heng stills. For a moment, he becomes an animal of prey, soft breath and shattered antlers and limbs locked for flight, in a way that no sword at his neck has ever made him.
Blade says, slowly, “You’re hurt.”

Shadows bloom like bruises in the hollows beneath Dan Heng’s eyes. He looks away, and then back again. “It’s fine,” he says, and he would say that, about a split lip or a severed arm or a sword through his heart. He doesn’t know how to be anything other than fine, just as Blade doesn’t know how to be anything other than this.
