Summary
"Perhaps I will take my lasso back, then. If that's alright with y'all." There is no malice behind his words and yet, Charles winces all the same.
"Of course." Edwin says, placing the lasso in Jem's hands. He stills, seemingly thinking something through before he leans forward and—to the shock of Charles—kisses the cowboy on the cheek. There's a small smirk on his lips as he pulls away, like he's proud of his ability to fluster the guy and for some reason, that worsens the weird, ugly pit in Charles' stomach.
"Thank you." Jem practically croons. He takes his hat off and fans at himself theatrically which makes Edwin smile, bright and wide.
Charles watches, feeling weirdly paralyzed despite the fact that he can feel both Niko and Crystal's eyes on him. He only realizes that his hands are clenched into fists at his sides when Niko takes his left hand into her own, rubbing soothing circles into his gloved knuckles.

"May I ask you something that might be a bit.. personal?" Edwin asked, hands clasped on the desk in front of him.
Charles glanced at the other boy, an uncertain smile on his lips. "Sure, mate? What's up?" He was sprawled lazily out on the couch, something Edwin believed was a 'hacky sack' flitting between his palms.
Edwin stilled, taking in a deep breath. "Um, well. I was just wondering, after the case of the Devlin House and the.. moment with the Night Nurse—" The hacky sack thumped against the floor, causing him to wince.
"Edwin," Charles warned, getting up from where he sat. "Mate, can we—"
"I don't mean to sound selfish but it's been eating away at me and I cannot bear to have this in my thoughts any longer." Whatever Charles was going to say died on his lips, his mouth contorting into a tight lipped frown. His gaze was unreadable, which was a quite rarity.
Edwin stood up from his chair, pushing himself away from the desk and taking slow, cautious steps towards the other boy. "We do not have to talk about this now but I just need to know." He balled his hands into fists. "Why didn't you tell me about your father? Or your home life?"

"Monty kissed you?" Charles couldn't help but interrupt loudly, just as Edwin had described he felt hot all over. He wondered what it would've been like to be in Monty's position. Maybe Charles would've been compelled to kiss Edwin, too, in whatever romantic moment they had.
"Yes."
"Did you want him to?"
"No." Edwin said, quieter this time. "It was barely a peck and I couldn't even feel it but I found myself wishing that it was—"
"Me." Charles exhaled deeply, a habit more than anything else.
"Precisely." Edwin replied curtly.
Charles stood there for a moment, trying to find the right words to say. "I've thought about kissing you." Those were not the right words.

It's a small house, nothing special, but the flowers in the front are a plethora of colors, vibrant, vivacious petals decorating the yard. And Race is a little too broke to buy flowers for his mom every week, so yeah, he takes a few from the garden. It's not like they’re taking inventory.
