    Hydra has Captain America in their custody, subdued into a medical coma. They have technology that will allow one of their agents to enter Rogers' mind, to perform espionage as Rogers dreams, with the goal of extracting a secret from him dangerous enough that it could topple his entire image. Once they destroy Captain America socially, they plan to replace him with a new role model, one a little more aligned with Hydra's goals, and then have the replacement run for US President. Alexander Pierce can feel victory in his fingers. Once they have that secret, they'll make sure Rogers can't remember the abduction and then release him. Then they'll expose him. Their new world order looms so close, Pierce can smell it.

    Pierce himself chose the agent to infiltrate Rogers' dreams. The perfect agent, one recruited especially because Rogers had a weak spot for him. Pierce sent the Winter Soldier into Steve Rogers' dreams.

    When the Soldier was pulled from Rogers' dreams to give the mission report, James Buchanan Barnes opened his eyes.
