Dan began running the second the siren started. He knew what it meant by now. The pharmacy he’d been working his way through began to swell and crumble around him like wet particle board, and he was already ducking towards the back exit to the alley, heart in his mouth, trying not to touch anything. When he had to reach out and turn the doorknob, it crushed like wet paper in his fist and came away dripping. The door itself began to bulge and sag, until finally, teeth gritted in disgust, Dan could shoulder his way through the once-solid wood like it was uncured paper mache.
This story is told in short, disconnected vignettes that will add up to a final understanding of what is happening here. Please enjoy the vibes along the way.
