“Right, so we just have to remind Buck of the hell he’s been going through because of,” Eddie rolls his eyes. “Tommy. Easy. Where did he crash?” Eddie asks, then makes a face and spits a feather of unknown origin out of his mouth.
Hen raises a brow. “I thought he was in the closet with you?”
Ravi, looking equal parts stoned and sloshed, tilts his head and wobbles further into the room. “No, I’m pretty sure he came out last year. Remember the soot debacle?”
“No, you doofus, I remember the soot thing.” Hen rolls her eyes and begins to look around the floor and the sides of the bed. “I meant, I thought he was sleeping in the closet with the rest of you. Like the Three Stooges.” She mutters the last part under her breath.

After Chimney's make-up bachelor party (a favor to Maddie, to keep in his wife's good graces and his brother-in-law from entering a depressive episode), himself, Hen, Eddie, and Ravi wake up in their hotel room to a missing Buck, a night they can't remember, and a frantic Maddie, who calls to report that Buck's ex-boyfriend is looking for him to try and patch things up. For a moment, Tim wonders why he gives these people any sort of time, because the only two people who would want him to be polite are six feet under and indefinitely comatose in the hospital. And then he thinks of Mrs. Roberts and imagines her telling him to be polite. The very thought digs into his very soul, aching and raw. Aided by the brisk air of Gotham’s night air and a thrilling sense of independence, Tim learns that some things feel more special when you get to keep them for yourself. Unaccompanied walks down the school halls and singular movie tickets and dinners-for-one aren’t so bad when he can entertain himself with his own thoughts.
Tim has become so good at being alone, he can almost pretend he isn’t desperate for the unconditional love and companionship that a soulmate would guarantee.
It would be nice, Tim thinks, to have someone in his life who actually wants him. Someone who won’t leave every chance they get. Someone who enjoys his presence instead of merely tolerating it. Someone for whom he isn’t an obligation.
Still his wrist remains blank.
Until it doesn't.

There’s a hand, fingers cold, on his elbow – someone trying to get his attention. Usually, usually, his staff would know that just calling his name is enough, that he’s fine-tuned to the sound of it like a dog waiting for a command. But as he looks down and then to the person the chilled digits belong to, he finds Whitaker staring up at him owlishly. A shudder goes through him, senses zeroing in on the point of contact.
“Can I help you?” It comes out bitchier than he intended, caught off-guard as he is. But he doesn’t take it back, not even when the kid bites at his lower lip as if he wants to apologize.
“I just wanted to ask if you liked the chicken parm.”
