Summary
Shane picks up on the third ring.
“What?”
Ilya closes his eyes, humiliation twisting his gut. Still, though, it’s nice to hear his voice. His shoulders sag a little. “Hollander?”
“I don’t–” Shane sighs, long and heavy. “Why are you calling?”
Why is he calling? Ilya couldn’t answer. Not in any way that makes sense, anyway.
Voice wobbling, Ilya says, “I am sorry.” He inhales, breath hitching horribly. “Was mistake.”
On the other line, Shane goes quiet. Then, shuffling around, he says, “What’s going on, Rozanov?”
Or: Ilya calls Shane in the middle of the night, and against his better judgment, Shane comes to find him.

“Bro, you will not believe what just happened in the Raider locker room!” JJ finally shook off the others and crossed over to Shane and Hayden.
“How do you know what goes on in the Raider locker room?” Shane asked hesitantly. This couldn’t be good.
“I have sources everywhere, capítaine.”
Shane asked before he could chicken out and run over to the other locker room himself. “What happened? Is someone hurt?”
“Better!”
“Better?” Shane and Hayden both exclaimed at the same time. “How could that possibly be a good thing?”
“They’re the enemy, Hollander, come on.” JJ said it like it was the most obvious thing in the world.
Oh no, please don’t let it be—
“It’s Rozanov bro!” JJ thrust his phone in their faces, “apparently his dad just busted in the locker rooms and started yelling at the guy!”
Or, Grigori Rozanov barges into the Raiders locker room and berates Ilya in front of his team. Protective Shane ensues.

“So, your dad’s kind of… intense.”
Ilya glanced at Sveta. They were behind the school, savouring the hour Ilya had between classes and hockey practice, both sipping on the chocolate milk their school had supplied during lunch.
“Does he ever, I don’t know, hug you?” Sveta asked, and Ilya hated how she looked at him. Almost like she felt sorry for him.
“Sure he does,” Ilya said, shrugging. “When I win at hockey, I guess.”
“And Alyosha?”
Ilya had to actually think about this one. And he felt uneasy when he realised that no, he’d never quite seen Grigori hug Alexei. “He’s not very good at hockey,” Ilya said, disliking how meek he sounded.

It was his father, and the politicians with their overwhelming demands for submission and smiles. The constant pressure of eyes following his every move. If it was just the cameras that would be one thing. Ilya knew how to work cameras.
