Something had shifted behind Cassian's eyes and Luthen had braced himself for a fight – a verbal one, hopefully – but Cassian had just sat down at Luthen's table and after a moment asked, "So I don't do anything unless you tell me to?" His voice had sounded slightly forced, but Luthen hadn't had any idea what was behind it. "You decide what I need to do with him and then I do it?"
It wasn't what Luthen had said, and he never would have put it like that. "Yes," he had answered. It wasn't what he had meant to say.

Buck's arm around his back, holding him up. Buck clipping the door frame with his own shoulder as he carefully maneuvered Eddie through it. The mattress squishing under him. Buck lifting up his head to slip a pillow under it. These were the things that he would remember the next morning. And one more thing: Buck's mouth close to his ear, close enough that he could feel Buck's hot breath on his cheek as he said, "You're not ready, I know. But when you are, send up that S.O.S. flare. Eddie, I'll be the first one here." The next morning, Eddie would remember hearing that and feeling like he was falling into water: that first shocking, nearly painful split second of breaking the surface tension. Then the slow, terrifying sink into the soft depths of the water. That was the feeling. And then he was asleep.
