    Summary

Three brush strokes to the right. Two to the left. A hand smoothing over his forehead, sweeping his bangs aside.

Shadow Milk knows the pattern well. His hair is always brushed the same way, in movements that seem almost robotic in how perfectly they’ve mastered the repetition. The bristles of the brush always skim over his closed eyes with such care, nimbly avoiding anywhere they might prick or poke. It always ends with a few final touches, tucking any stray wisps back into place before the brush is set back down on the dresser before him.

Pure Vanilla’s hands smooth through Shadow Milk’s hair, coming to rest gently on his shoulders.

    “There. Ready for the day?”

    Shadow Milk does not answer.

Shadow Milk has not answered in a long, long time.

    “General Cyno—”

    “‘Cyno’ will do.”

Alhaitham acquiesces. “Cyno. Just to be clear,” he starts, in a tone that conveys how little of this is clear to him at all, “you claim that I am currently five years into the future.”

    Summary

No one told Laios just how lonely it would be to be the king.

He didn’t think of it at the time, when Yaad had suggested the arrangement. There had been a lot going on, a lot to sort out. Sisters to save, monsters to stop, worlds to keep from ending, countries rising from the sea. He hadn’t had room to breathe with all that needed to be done, much less time to consider what the future would actually look like.

(Maybe Laios has never been that good at thinking ahead. Or thinking through the consequences of his actions.)

But sisters became safe and mostly whole. Monsters became meat, or else disappeared, or else ran from him, now. Worlds did not end, which was good, and countries became stable, which in the long term was almost the same thing. Time moved forward, and he kept living.

Which meant he got to see exactly how lonely it could be, when the mundane day to day finally caught up with him.

Laios deals with being the one left behind. It's easier, though, with Kabru by his side.

“I told you I didn’t want to hurt you. Did you want to hurt me?” his tone was open, not a trace of accusation.

Kabru swallowed the knee-jerk lie that formed in his throat. It burned on the way down.

“A little,” he confessed, and it felt like falling.

(Kabru is paranoid Laios views him as a monster, and has a very complicated way of confronting it.)
