This wasn’t supposed to happen. This was meant to be an easy mission, if there ever was such a thing; more like routine. It was the type of op Omega had run at least a hundred times by now, one she barely even had to plan with the rest of the squad she had been entrusted with leading.
Rescue and retrieval. It was the first true job Omega had run with her brothers when they started working for Cid, and they would continue to run it dozens of times over the course of Omega’s training. It was almost second nature to her now. She had prepared for every contingency.
Every contingency except for this, because this was no longer a simple rescue and retrieval. This was a hostage situation.
And the hostage was the closest person Omega had to a father.

Crosshair always had a way of doing this, of getting people to do exactly what he was accusing them of doing. Hunter tightened his hands into fists and closed his eyes again, letting out a breath that was almost a growl as he fought against the instincts that begged for a fight.
His voice was ragged when he mustered a different response. “I don’t want to argue.”
“Then you made a mistake trying to change things.”
Adjusting to a peaceful life on Pabu isn't without its growing pains, and Hunter finds that all he wants is to truly know his youngest brother again. Crosshair, however, isn't as willing and able to make that happen.

Hunter’s brow rose. He let out a huff as the tip of her bold flame began to lick at him, burning him in a way he had found himself missing. It was familiar. Tempting. Almost relieving.
It was dangerous. She was dangerous. But when he was the only one who could get hurt, it was even harder to stay away from the heat of her fire.
This pain was comfortable, and for the first time in a long time, Hunter let himself lean into it.
When Hunter's injured after his and Wrecker's outing with Fennec Shand, he receives a helping hand he hadn't expected, one that offers much more than just a simple remedy.

A premature detonation from a faulty fuse. Hunter couldn’t stop replaying those words in his mind as he relived that horrifying moment over and over again, watching Wrecker throw himself on top of the explosive that could’ve killed all four of them in a single blast. Of course Wrecker had been the one to spot the defect. Of course he hadn’t hesitated to act as a human shield. Of course he had almost been killed by the very thing he had been named for.
Hunter should have been grateful, because things should have been much worse. Wrecker shouldn’t have been alive. None of them should have. And yet he still found himself hoping for a different outcome.

Standing here now, months after taking down Tantiss and deciding to hang up their armor and weapons for good, Hunter was still struggling to assess whether his fear was justified. If what was meant to be harmless fun could somehow go wrong in the blink of an eye.

Wrecker was taken aback by Omega’s sudden statement. Her serious tone was a stark contrast to the playfulness of what they had been doing most of the morning. Omega watched his brow furrow in the corner of her eye as she bent down to analyze another shell.
His confusion was genuine. “Crosshair?” Wrecker let out a fond scoff. “Nah, he’s always been this way. He’ll be ready to talk eventually.”
Omega shook her head and held tighter to the shell in her grasp. “I’m not talking about Crosshair.”
Omega wants things to go back to normal after escaping Tantiss. Hunter wants to keep her safe from everything, including himself.
But what they need is to stop hiding from each other, and they're both done waiting.
