Summary

Seated on the Iron Throne, Daemon had never regretted anything like he regretted grasping for a crown.
By some omen –good or ill– the Red Dragon banner had come to rest atop its fallen prince. It lay over him like a shroud. Baelor’s breath was labored –dying– beneath it. He made last, feeble attempts to claw out from under it, like a man only half-dead but already entombed.
Daemon couldn’t bear for Baelor to die like that, blind, desperate, despairing. He hadn’t meant– but it was too late now. There was no going back.
The silken banner peeled back effortlessly in Daemon’s hands. Sweat sheened Baelor’s skin. His hair, usually cropped close to his skull, must have escaped the clippers on the long march up from Dorne, for it betrayed the beginnings of curls, even that stubborn one that used to fall into Baelor’s eyes as they sparred, long ago, in their youths, before the resentment took Daemon by the throat.
