"Shane almost wishes he could go back to a time before he tripped, before Ilya knew his secret, before his team hated him so much they couldn’t even look at him. He was dropping all the time, he was miserable and hurt and drowning under his expectations, but at least he knew what was expected of him and what his future held and how he was supposed to act.
Shane is so close to freedom he can taste it. He knows, deep down inside of him, that freedom is what he has always wanted. He still does. He knows he does. The problem is that he has never been truly free, so he didn’t know the path to freedom would feel like this. He didn’t know it would hurt almost as much as his cage, and he hates that he’s the kind of person who starts to implode once it’s finally within reach.
The burden of choice hurts like a bitch and Shane is so fucking tired that he’s starting to wonder if any of this was actually worth it."
Or, it's the off season now and Shane is struggling with the uncertainty of his future and the weight of the decisions he still has to make.

“Hollander.” Shane’s head snaps back to his left. Ilya is much closer, pace slightly hurried. “Come here.” His voice sort of mimics the way one would talk to an animal paralyzed in fight-or-flight. Shane is not sure what to make of that.
He slowly turns his head in the opposite direction, where his vision tunnels on the door for the stairwell. It almost glows like a special item in a video game, like a hint. Without giving himself time to doubt, he bolts.
“Wha- Hollander, what the fuck!” Ilya shouts in audible disbelief, and Shane distinctly hears matching thuds of frantic footsteps behind him; Ilya is chasing after him. Shane runs faster, positively sprinting at this point. He’s the fastest skater in the NHL right now. He can do this. He flings the door open and bounds down the steps two at a time, hitting the walls with each turn of a corner. If he eats shit on this filthy floor and embarrasses himself in front of Ilya, he thinks, he’ll never let himself see the light of day ever again.

Summary

Ilya, devastated by Shane's injuries that left him semi-conscious in a hospital bed, learns what it means to have a family and what "for better or worse" meant in his wedding vows. His days are full of misunderstandings with his mother-in-law, panic, caring for his husband, and seeing his team step up for his family in times of injury.

I guess when I woke up this morning I realized that you don’t have to do that anymore.” Little crumbs of muffin litter Shane’s chin. Ilya wants to reach out and dust them away but he can’t bring himself to drop Shane’s hand. Not in this perfect moment.
“I will always bring you home coffee,” Ilya says. He wants to spend the rest of his life showing up for Shane in every way he needs.
Shane squeezes his hand and gives a slight shake of his head before taking a long drink of his coffee.

Summary
Shane could hear the crowd, loud as always in their home barn. It felt electric tonight. He didn't usually let the emotions of the occasion affect him, but after 22 years in the MLH, having accomplished everything he could do as a professional, tonight’s send-off was too much to push all the way down into that small compartment where he could hide all he felt.
But Ilya–Shane felt physical pain in his chest every time he allowed himself to think his name. Their careers still forever tied together until Ilya’s retirement a few years ago. In the quietest of times, Shane could admit he shouldn’t have felt lonely at the top because Ilya was always right there with him. Sometimes he took solace in that, sometimes it brought pain so blinding he couldn’t breathe.

Shane Hollander retires from the MLH a few seasons after Ilya. They haven't actually spoken since the day Shane left in Boston. When Ilya is invited to participate in Shane's retirement ceremony, will they take the opportunity to confront the feelings they have long buried but kept sacred or are they still just two stars passing in the night?
