    He had smiled, greeted the interviewer, but the first question didn't even reach him.

    Something happened.

    He felt it before he saw it— in fact, he felt it happening before a lot of other people did. It was subtle, a quaint little buildup of energy before it crescendoed into something bigger, something not as nice. He couldn't pinpoint where it was being emitted from at first; the paddock was always so full of a buzzing noise that built around them like static. Whatever— or rather whoever's magic it was— it was spiky, prickling the back of his neck, hairs standing up. There was an ill intent behind the motions, aggravated and tinted red, one that left a sickly film against the roof of Oscar's mouth.
