But Lyonel's face opens up in a smile, an ugly little scornful grimace high on defiance, and Maekar tumbles back fifteen years when the man had no gray streaks framing his laughs and patience didn't make the cut into his resume's soft skills. It still doesn't, although Lyonel's made a point of coming off more lenient than he'd like, with Maekar at least, or else he would've vacated his life altogether. He's a sturdy man at best, unable to let a bruise go once it's punched into him.
"I do what I please," he hisses, taking another step forward.

“So they choose a companion, don’t they? A nice looking bird companion. They’ve got plenty of choice in the colony but they spot the right one and never look back on their decision. It’s still not clear whether there’s a pattern behind their method because let’s be real: how would an animal look around, point a, well, I guess it’s a wing in this particular case, point a wing at another individual, seal the relationship of a lifetime and never revisit the decision again?” Shanks takes off the other boot and watches Mihawk slowly descend toward him. “But then, is it a decision at all? It could be the opposite of random, they could sincerely fall in love with their mate as they cultivate the social interactions within the colony.”

“Is it working?” Red’s question is tinged with hope. He’s intermittent again, away from the theatron and Buggy’s shrieking, away from the flock of students interfering with the dying star. The frames on the screen loop, black and white and black and white once more, reflecting off Red’s cheeks, darkening his eyes and lips, bathing them in pale gloom. The lights turn on and there he is, still strong with hope.
“Perhaps,” Mihawk replies.

Silver is out of his chair and across the room before he knows it. He has a grip on the barkeep's shirt before he knows it, and he's pulling him up, hauling him eye-level, only to head-butt him to the ground again. The barkeep's mouth is thrown open in a wail, but there's no sound, Silver thinks, no sound at all, save for the blood rushing in his ears as he looks at the other man on the ground, watches him roll to his side with a groan.
Flint, Silver thinks, and nothing else. It beats around the knife in his gut like a drum. Flint.
And then Flint is looking at him.
