Summary
Minerva intended to win a war; she did not intend to become a parent. But the recent war has left many children orphaned or without caretakers, among them two of her youngest students. Minerva and Wil embark upon the summer before Minerva’s tenure as Headmistress as first-time parents to two little girls, both traumatized not only by the recent war, but by darkness in their past, and find that the ways they grew up, the beliefs they’ve long held, may not still apply. The summer is full well-intentioned parenting mishaps, and life as a family of four both strains and grows the relationships Wil and Min have had with others.
CW: nothing graphic, but both girls have suffered different types of abuse. Any time we address it with any detail I’ll flag that chapter and make it possible to skip.

Summary
Minerva McGonagall is too old to play with dolls, thank you VERY much, and even if she WERE going to ask for one for Christmas (which she wouldn’t because she is going to be twelve by then and anyway it’s not like she’d get one) she wouldn’t play with it.
This story begins in 1946. The relationship endgame is McGonagall/Grubbly-Plank, but there is zero chance we get there in this story. For the purposes of this story, Minerva was born in 1934.
This story is mostly a place to put all the background for Queen of Spades. Minerva is a pretty rigid and inflexible person with an enormous heart and wells of courage in the books; but she can be her own worst enemy. Her childhood has been unforgiving and austere, and though her parents think she is amazing, they aren’t great at showing it. She’s forever trying to measure up to metrics no one but her can work out.
CW & Smut:
There are hints of non-consensual sex, and definitely some bullying, and some assaults. There is mild physical discipline of children but not graphic, and not the plot focus. Minerva does have a gf but not until 3rd year.Series
