“Alright, bird on shoulder: check. Uncombed hair: check.”
Simon whipped around, hand moving toward his side as if his katana were actually at his waist. The young woman behind him grinned.
“Ooh, and vaguely menacing. That’s three for three!”
“Who in the blazes—”
“Hello, Simon Blackquill!” Her hands fell to her hips, a grin spreading across her face. “My name is Kay Faraday, and today I’ll be stealing the role of tour guide.”

Summary
What Simon appreciated about Ema was that she never asked him how he was coping. There was no walking on eggshells, no suggestions on how to reintegrate himself into society. The fact that he was a convict was something incidental to his identity, and not something she needed to help him overcome.
Even when things did turn personal, however, Ema didn’t pry or treat him like a project.
Their conversations were casual. Normal. Made him feel like a person.
She was opinionated but not arrogant, sympathetic but not patronising, and was passionate about her line of work in a way that was endearing rather than insufferable.
Ema was everything The Phantom wasn’t, and yet every time he looked at her, he couldn’t help but wonder when the mask was going to slip.
Simon works with a new detective on his first case after being released from prison.

Summary
Garp thought he was quite brilliant when, in an effort to discourage Ace and Sabo’s ambitions of piracy, he gives them custody of his new baby grandson. After all, the two might have been teenage delinquents, but even they wouldn’t actually go out to sea with a baby in their care, right?
Hint: he is very, very wrong.
(An AU where Luffy is born 16 years after Ace instead of 3, and Sabo remains with Ace on Mt. Corvo instead of trying to set sail on his own.)
