Summary
Hans lies in the grass outside Devil's Den, sweltering in the sun. He's liable to go mad here, he thinks. There's too much time to dwell on things, on nightmares of Suchdol and bodies littering the courtyard. On the wound in his shoulder that will never cease to hurt him, the way he has traded a gilded cage for rickety one made from crumbling plaster and ale stained wood. He will always be trapped somehow, by his own body or by circumstance it doesn't matter. What matters is the relief he finds in the weight of Henry atop him, whispering sharp words mixed with praise into his ear. He is changing, though what he will become he does not know.
And Henry, he is changing too, into a man who can't seem to find peace. Someone who can't be a moment without a job or without a fight.
War, it seems, has altered them both.

Summary
Hans tongue rubs hot on the bone of Henry’s ankle and Henry’s eyes roll back. His cock slides down to rub against the curve of his ass. It teases at his hole and Henry grinds his hips down, as though his will alone could bring Hans back inside him.

He’s got a flier in his hand, too busy staring at it to pay attention. Some place called the Vault. The ad says it’s relocated, and there’s probably an address on it but it’s covered by Armand’s thumb. In the neon light his bone white skin glows; first warm gold, and then, when the lights change, shocking red.
“What is an S&M club?” Armand asks.

Summary
Daniel's linen shirt is wrinkled where it stretches tight across his chest, top three buttons left open to expose to the glistening plane of his sternum. A lock of blond hair is wet where it touches his forehead, curled from the humidity and Armand aches to push it aside. To drag his fingers through the mess of it. He could drop into Daniel’s lap and do it right now.
Armand folds his arms across his chest. He tracks the way Daniel’s thumb flicks over the switch on the lighter. Once, twice, and then it sparks to life.
“You’re the one who picks these disgusting muggy places to live, not me,” Daniel mutters, smoke crawling from between his lips. “I don’t see why you like this kind of weather so much.”
Daniel and Armand settle in Miami. Spend the evening on a hotel balcony and work out how to work someone dead into a sweat.

Summary
The last piece of meat on the tray is cold, slimy between Armand’s fingertips. He lays it across the grill and watches how the fat floats in the red puddle of plasma that covers the empty plate.
“You’re incorrect, however,” Armand says as he drags his fingertip through the mess. He holds it up, watches Daniel watch the pale red liquid drip down the top of his knuckle and catch on the near invisible hairs below it. “The taste of the food, the manner by which it comes to your mouth- that is entirely for you. What follows is mine. The secret rumble of your guts as you absorb that which I’ve fed you- that is for me.”
(Daniel and Armand visit Tokyo, explore the local food, and experiment with the intimacy of feeding.)

Summary
Annoying, how hot it is to see Armand kneeling on the dirty bathroom floor like this. Without her heels to compensate for their height difference she looks small, delicate. Her face is on the level with Daniel’s hips and Daniel knows what’s about to happen. Armand has probably been planning for this since they stepped into the store, she realizes. There’s no way she’d catch Daniel bleeding for the first time and let that go.

Armand has had him driving in circles looking at Christmas lights since the sun went down. What he’s looking for, Daniel doesn’t know. Doesn’t know if he cares, really. After seeing the fourth house strangled by candy colored lights they all start to look alike.
They could be home where it’s warm, listening to Bing Crosby on the record player. Could be baking cookies Armand can’t eat, could be horsing around in the snow one last time before this move to Miami Armand keeps muttering about. Could be doing something, anything they haven’t done together before, because fuck, how many more Decembers does Daniel have left?

Daniel ought to be cataloging his questions for Armand about how all of this works. Why Louis’ bite had made him sick, why Armand’s has had entirely the opposite effect. If it’s some special magic only Armand contains, like the influence Louis had described him using in their interview.

Armand catches snippets of it here and there. In the crowded, smoke filled apartment of their newest acquaintances Daniel pictures waking up sticky and sore. At their night class on cooking he day dreams about bite marks he doesn’t remember receiving, and it’s only Armand’s jab to his ribs that keeps him from letting his casserole burn. As they press their way into a packed club, slipping between sweaty, humid bodies, Daniel fantasizes about an orgasm he’s unaware of, wrung from his sleeping body.
He can’t stop picturing himself as a living buffet, an unconscious toy to be played with. To be drank from while unaware. He wonders what Armand would do to him in the quiet dark of their bedroom asleep with no one around to witness the act. In what ways he would violate him.

The medical thing- that’s the only name for it Daniel can think of, he refuses to think of this as a fetish no matter how much it’s becoming ingrained in his libido- is fast becoming Armand’s newest obsession. There’s enough anatomy textbooks in their apartment Daniel could pass an exam and get his MD at this point, if only Armand would put them down long enough for him to read them. But Armand is greedy with them, secretive. He pours over them every night, curled up in a wingback chair so that Daniel can’t see what he’s studying.
So that the exam itself will be a surprise.

Outside the palazzo the sky is grey, shot with pink threads that announce the coming dawn. Amadeo can see it through the crack in the drapes that surround the bed. His master’s bed. His bed, which feels like home to him at night but becomes a prison at sunrise every morning. He rubs his cheek against the pillow and tries to close his eyes. But the goldwork cherubs that adorn the velvet scrape at his skin. With the blood flowing in him like this, it’s as though he can feel every single metal wrapped thread that presses into his cheek. It makes it impossible to sleep.
