Madeline grinned at her, squeezing her hand tightly. “The entire world will know that Helen Sharp is my best friend,” she said. “I’ll take you to all the award shows, and we’ll go on red carpets together, and I’ll dedicate my first Oscar to you.”
“Oh, don’t be silly, Mads,” Helen said. “You’ll be friends with people like that,” she gestured to the poster.
“Maybe,” Madeline shrugged. “But you’ll be my best friend.”

Her mother holds her face, a hand on each cheek. Her grasp is too firm. “Maddie. You do not want to marry a woman. You do not think women are pretty. You do not love women.” Madeline opens her mouth to protest but is silenced by the look in her mother’s eyes. “This is not a discussion, dear. This is something you are going to learn here and now. We will not have this conversation again. Do you understand?” Madeline nods, shakily. She doesn’t understand why, but she certainly knows what her mother means. And she knows to follow the rules.
Character study of Madeline throughout her life. She and her mom are both painfully aware that she's a lesbian but they're trying to pretend that's not real--lots of stuff with her mother, lots of low self-esteem depressing sex with men. MadHel, but it's gonna take a sec and most of it will be repression and yearning.
