Summary
Not for the first time, Illuga thinks there must be something wrong with him. Maybe he’s been possessed by the Wild Hunt. Maybe the kuuvahki is finally getting to him; one too many mandragoras, or something like that.
Either way, there has to be a reason. Why else would Illuga keep letting Lohen into his bed? Why else would Illuga allow Lohen to use his body again and again, leaving Illuga with bruised skin, aching bones, and a weary heart?
‘Friends with benefits’ is a phrase he’s heard before, and it makes sense. The life of a Lightkeeper can be cold and lonely, so it’s only natural to seek warmth and comfort from another. But Illuga never expected to find himself in such an arrangement, if what they have can even be called that. Lohen’s rough treatment offers no benefits, and they certainly aren’t friends. Illuga doesn’t even like him.
This can’t possibly be what Flins had in mind when he suggested that Illuga take up a new hobby.

Ashveil looks at him through the section of hair falling over his face, unsure of what he must look like with steam blowing in his face.
“You’re so beautiful,” Ren croaks. He bites his lip, enough to draw blood, and licks it all up in a way that makes it seem like he hadn’t meant to do all that. “Are you my deliverance?”
Oh and his eyes—they’re hopeful.

A gentle pink flush settles firmly on his cheeks. “But it’s not a big deal, okay? I mean, it is a big deal, but if I tell you that then you’ll ask and I don’t want to tell you I get off to thinking of you?” Gaku smacks himself in the face. “Arghhh, I did it again!”
It's not his fault. It's a compulsion; a little ritual Yugamu has to go through sometimes to sate his own fear that something will go horrifically, terribly wrong. And, well; an interrupted ritual always invites trouble, even if it is for the sake of a defensive battle.
Gaku doesn't want to admit to these things, but whatever truth drug Yugamu put into this curry is seriously ruining his life! Really, his luck is so pitifully rotten; the guy hasn't even been looking him in the eye for the past week, and now he has to deal with this!?

How painfully sweet, that they'd told him they wanted him to live with them. It would have been so much easier for him if they would simply say that he would no longer be useful to them, there among the rest of society, but they probably thought that they meant it. Their expressions were painfully earnest as they spoke, and Yugamu wondered if Darumi was starry-eyed enough to believe it.
Maybe it was easier for them to entertain the idea of domesticity, a simple little life they could slot into, and when they finally noticed he'd drifted away it would be no fault of their own.
A dog could survive on scraps, could learn to be grateful for them, even. But you still had to leave it something.
