Amalia resisted the urge to stomp her foot in annoyance. The weather had been unseasonably warm that morning for mid-October—mild and pleasant and fresh—so on a hopeful whim, she neglected to wear a coat when she left for work. She regretted her decision immensely now that she found herself standing huddled under a narrow awning with Georg Nowack, as thunder rumbled in the distance and wind whipped chilly rain under their makeshift shelter as if there was no shelter at all.
