“Why?”
Katie stills. The single word roots her to the spot.
Her legs tremble beneath her, threatening to give out entirely.
“Multi.” His name breaks apart on her tongue, barely louder than a whisper, and takes a tentative step towards him.
She sees his jaw tighten, and she halts.
“I trusted you,” he starts, voice quiet, almost empty. “Nacho loves you. I did everything I could to protect both of you, our family. And you— you—”
Katie notices the tremble in his fingers before he tugs the sleeves of his lab coat down over them.
“Why?” he asks again, defeated this time, tired.
