Even the Lux Arrow streaking across the sky cannot inspire the kind of overawed terror this boy instills in him. Mouth dry, Jing Yuan smiles shakily and attempts a delicate rejection, clasping one of those tiny outstretched hands to lower it. But when the kid realizes what’s happening, his crestfallen expression makes Jing Yuan feel like someone has run a sword straight through his heart, and he folds like wet paper, gathering the child up in his arms.
Jing Yuan’s sudden reversal has the child giggling with delighted surprise, and oh.
Oh.
There is a boy whose smile is brighter than the rising sun.

“The memories of your family will always belong to you, and be your strength and comfort,” Lumine says, laying a hand over Jeht’s elbow.
She can feel Jeht tense under her fingertips, though she doesn’t pull away, only further tilts her head up. She stands deathly still for a moment. Then, her free arm reaches out for the cloth covering her eyes.
“Jeht…” Lumine’s voice is barely above a whisper, her hand trailing lightly up to Jeht’s shoulder, firmly steadying her. “I’m here.”
A suspiciously wet noise escapes from Jeht, her hand tensing over her cloth, crumpling it until it easily slips away from behind her ears.
“He’s at peace, now. That’s all I can wish for.”
