Summary
There are fingers prying open the buttons on Daniel’s shirt, his jeans. Louis, laying him bare, staring him down with a knowing smile and chilly jadeite eyes. “I think you want to be good for me,” Louis murmurs. “I think you like to be told how smart you are. How good.”
A mortifying flush starts to creep up Daniel’s throat. The only disadvantage of eating well. He braces his composure again. “Our other halves leave for ten minutes and you’re already assessing me for psychosexual dismantlement? Again?”
Louis grins at him, so very sharp. God, that smile. “They’ll like the view when they get back. And you’re fun to play with.” Slim hands tracing Daniel’s collarbones now, parting the silver thatch of hair on his chest. “So. You tell me, clever boy. What’re you going to do to make me happy I spent my night with you and not that article?”

Grace felt him before she saw him—sensed his eager, flickering energy as he stepped onto her grounds. He was more excited about being there than anyone had a right to be. But he was nervous too, and that was more justified. She felt his energy curdle when her—when Jefferson cornered him. He wasn't happy to see this new face here, either.

Summary
[Vera] goes to Mass on every holy day, and many other days. She works to do good in the world, and to continue her father’s legacy. She cooks for Cyrus and cleans up after him and drives him to school and to friends’ houses and makes herself love him unconditionally. If she never finds joy in her duties, then she must be mistaken about how true joy feels.
She gives up alcohol, except for rare social occasions and the Eucharist. She gives up being with women. She gives up her atheist friends when they question her devotion. She gives up cigarettes slowly, painfully, stopping and starting until one day she realises she hasn’t thought about buying a pack with her groceries in weeks.
All things considered, it’s easy to relinquish things. Letting go is easier than holding on. She just closes her eyes and remembers the tranquility she felt that night after her confession. Even if she can’t reach that tranquility, imagining it is something.
