Distant, somber, silent - Bucky had been like this after his rescue from Azzano, no doubt dealing with what HYDRA and Arnim Zola had done to him during his captivity. And yet, he’d opted to stay, opted to remain at Steve’s side - out of love, loyalty, conviction - had Bucky told him that he wanted to go home, he wouldn’t have begrudged him that choice in the least. He had stayed, and this was the result. Bucky was alive, but merely existing, when he thought no one was looking. Those blue eyes, pale and intense, that Steve loved to draw so much, were unfocused and fixed a point beyond what anyone on this train could ever hope to see. He looked listless and adrift, lost in an ocean of his own subconscious, clinging to shards of flotsam and memory.
- Steve Rogers survived the crash of the Valkyrie, and made it to see the end of the war. On V-E Day, Peggy Carter informs him of a soldier in a London hospital with no memory, who had been recovered by the Soviets on routine patrol in the Italian Alps.

So when he notices the unresolved tension simmering between Will and Mike, he decides to do something about it. But before he can even process what that truly entails, he’s already knee deep in secrets, feelings, and “friendships” that are a lot more complicated than he signed up for.
OR: What starts as a distraction from missing Max turns into the most complicated plan of Lucas’s life as he shifts from helping Will get over Mike to setting them up together (because he’s the bestest, most supportive friend ever, obviously!)
