Summary
The Clave is more harsh than it is lenient. After all, 'the law is hard but it's the law' as Alec Lightwood well knows.
So when the fact that he has found the Cup but not reported it leaks to the Clave, they're displeased. Their ire only grows when officials arrive to find that the Cup is also missing, with Alec's own stele having been used to steal it.
With his sister, parabatai and Valentine's daughter all missing, there is no one to have Alec's back when the Clave take their pound of flesh, and destroy Alec's purpose in life in the process.

Summary
The older gifts of nephil families have faded with time and when the Trueblood and Lightwood families join, it's the Lightwood gifts that are expected to revive.
Instead, it's the Trueblood's.
To hunt the shadows, one must know the shadows and the Trueblood's are true to their first calling. The stronger the blood, the deeper the bond and the better to hunt the dangers in the shadows by being one with the shadows.

He should say no, he should back away and pretend this night ever happened, but there’s something about Alec, something that makes him hesitate and next thing he knows he’s pulling the shadowhunter through the crowd and out the back door of the club. He presses Alec against the cold brick and kisses him in the dark alleyway. There’s laughter, the hooting and hollering of various people, but the only thing that matters in that moment is Alec’s lips on his and the way fingers tangle in his hair, tugging gently, forcing small whines from his mouth.“You can’t tell anyone about this,” Magnus pants. “It would be bad for both if anyone found out”
