Summary
Viserys III Targaryen, brother of Daenerys. We know him as a cruel, abusive fool. Yet we hear repeatedly from Daenerys that her earlier memories of Viserys are fond and loving. Once, Viserys was a protective elder brother, raising her up on tales of Targaryen lineage.
So what changed? What twisted the loving elder brother into the abusive tyrant who dies screaming a thousand leagues from home?
After the untimely death of Ser Willem Darry in 290 AC, the servants stole everything the children had to their name, and the Targaryens were forced out of their home. What followed was almost seven years of wandering from place to place, begging for aid and being repeatedly humiliated, all while fleeing assassins both real and imaginary.
This A Song of Ice and Fire / Game of Thrones fanfic, my first fanfic ever, is a canon divergence that asks a simple question, yet one that will have an outsized impact on both Viserys and Daenerys: What if Willem Darry lived?
