Summary
They were both losers, but in different ways. Shuichi was almost the textbook definition of loser, being enrolled in an elite university didn't change that. He rarely got good sleep, he never prioritized tasks that needed to be at the top of the list, he spent his time lazing about and throwing his life away. Kaede was a different story. She was just useless. No matter how hard you looked, she had no talents, no natural skill, no superiority in any activity she pursued.
But losers can't stay alone forever, can they? It's pathetic, but I'm sure it's a known fact that losers get along with other losers.

he pauses mid-bite, a mix of annoyance and resignation on his face. he knew this conversation was coming eventually. he sighs, putting down his fork. "Do we have to do this right now?" he eyes her warily, knowing fully well that he couldn't avoid this much longer. it's been an unspoken agreement between the two of them - she gets to drink his blood in return for letting him stay here.
an can sense his reluctance, but the smirk on her face only grows wider. she taps her fangs with her finger, looking him up and down in a way that makes it clear she won't take no for an answer. "we don't have to. but...i've been holding back for quite a while now and i'm getting hungry for another taste..." she leans across the table, closing the distance between them, her gaze locked onto his neck.

Akito nodded in understanding, his expression turning more sympathetic. "I get that. But you have to take care of yourself too, you know. You can't work on this case all the time."
An sighed, knowing that he was right. "I know, I know. But I can't help it. This case is just so frustrating, and I can't stand not being able to solve it..."
Akito chuckled, reaching out to run a hand through her hair. "You and your work ethic. You always do this, you know. You get so invested in a case and then you forget to eat, sleep, and everything."
An rolled her eyes again, but there was a small smile on her face. "Yeah, yeah, I know. I just can't help it. When I'm working on a case, it's like everything else just fades away. All I can think about is finding that one clue or piece of information that will crack the case wide open."
Akito chuckled again, his hand still stroking her hair. "You're one of a kind, you know that? But seriously, you should take a break at some point. You're going to burn yourself out if you keep this up."
An nodded reluctantly. "Yeah, I know. You're right. I just... I can't help it. This case is just really bothering me."

“It feels like a part of me is trapped in there with her,” Shuichi admits in a quiet voice. The knotting in his stomach loosens a fraction as he verbalises his feelings, but only a fraction. It would take a lot more than saying how he feels to make him feel better at this point.
Kaito, for his part, just nods. “Yeah. There’s a lot still up in the air with her not awake, huh?” He rests his cheek in his palm, eyes half-lidded. “You think it’s been missing all this time?”
He means, Shuichi assumes, since Kaede was executed. It’s a difficult question to answer… not that Shuichi didn’t feel empty when she died, but more so that he had to move on so quickly, he barely had time to mourn her. The thought of it makes his throat tighten now; Kaede had deserved to be mourned properly.
Well, Shuichi has probably done enough mourning in the past month to last Kaede a lifetime, so maybe there isn’t any point in lingering on that thought.
“I think so,” Shuichi admits eventually.
