There was no use in prying open a stubborn lock. Regardless, even in their most bitter moments, Olruggio trusted Qifrey. Though he could not excuse all of his actions, he knew enough that none were born out of malice.
"...What?"
Perhaps, had fate been kinder—had Olruggio peered through the fog of his own emotions—he would've caught a most startling sight. The sudden creak of something he could not name should've garnered his attention in the still air. Instead, he heard only that tacit murmur, so soft and frail that it trembled like leaves in a great storm.
A confrontation with Qifrey goes south, and he leaves unannounced only to come back a different witch.

Summary
It's common for Witches to form pack bonds with their apprentices. Witch pups are so young when they typically join an atelier, and their journey to independence is long. Being away from one's birth pack for too long requires a surrogate pack before a pup's mental health begins to decline.
Coco knows this, but she still cannot help feeling torn between the longing to belong in Master Qifrey's pack with a yearning so strong it sets her teeth on edge, and fear of what this desire means for her bond with her mother, sleeping in stone for who knows how long.
