Tartarus does not slumber, he watches his creations. Ensures they continue fighting and struggling to earn their place in the food chain.
Percy is losing pieces of himself. His kindness was stripped away in the river of pain. His hesitation eaten by a pack of hellhounds. His mercy died with whimper in an empty stone village. He only hopes there will be enough of him left when they escape.
Annabeth did what it took to save them both, and she will never forgive herself. She remembered Hera once told Percy he would destroy the world to save her, how ironic.OR, an AU where Annabeth and Percy cannot just shake off the trauma of Tartarus like they do in cannon. Body horror is dialed up to 11, I've added every fucked up way to torture our protagonists that couldn't be in a YA novel. And in the end it all revolves around the relationship between Percy and Annabeth, how the trauma pushes them apart and brings them together, how far they are willing to go, and who are they willing to hurt.

First he thought he was a waterbender (like Master Katara), then he thought he was a demititan (why else would Triton be so worried about his parentage?), and then he was told he was a demigod. Now he's got to deal with the rising conflict and a war on the horizon while learning how to be a good prince of the sea.
