Summary
The bootsteps were outside the door, and Grace stopped fidgeting, going as still as an animal trying to play dead in the woman’s arms. The doorknob jiggled suddenly and Grace flinched, and was pressed harder into the wall for it. The woman had locked the door though and the man on the other side – the monster that had been pursuing Grace – simply walked away, his heavy footfalls receding further down the hall. There was another crash of thunder outside, muffled by the door, and a low whine of fear bubbled out of Grace before she could stop it. The pair stood in tense, heavy silence for a few beats, both straining to hear if the footsteps returned, but the only sound outside the door was the muffled rage of the thunderstorm.
Slowly, the woman’s eyes went back to Grace’s face, and she raised an eyebrow.
“Grace Ashcroft.” The woman’s voice was dry with annoyance, and Grace went very still. “You’ve gotten blood on my sleeve.”
Alone and afraid in Rhodes Hill Care Centre, Grace stumbles into an ally.

Summary
Jeanne tracked the magic to the gymnasium. It hung in the air like it wanted its presence known and it had gone from a metallic tang on Jeanne’s tongue to the heavy, coppery taste of blood. A summoning, and a powerful one at that, but done by an unpracticed hand. The magic had taken more form – not sloppy as Jeanne had initially thought, but untamed.
As though the witch had slept for centuries then tried to summon with half her power and a mind addled with confusion.
The thought was thrown to the back of her mind immediately. Jeanne wouldn’t entertain it. It would not be.
Jeanne, and the refusal to let herself hope.

Summary
They were deep in the forest again, the trees huge and ancient. The mist had settled along the forest floor, beaten into submission by the rain, and Carmina came to a stop. Mikaela shifted in her arms and her hair brushed Carmina’s collarbone, and the painter suppressed a shudder, chasing the feeling all the way down her spine.
Survivors die and forget, but killers always remember.

Summary
There's a voice whispering to her, echoing from deep in her ribs. Its tongue grazes her breastbone and claws scuttle along the bottom of her throat. It’s winding itself around her ribs like a rose vine, thorns grazing her bones, petals kissing every red part of her as roses bloom open in her chest. The thing coos softly at her and whispers, doesn’t Cereza have such a pretty heartbeat?
Jeanne has to agree. The thing in her chest twines around itself, and she lets her tongue trace the grooves between her teeth.
Jeanne returns from Inferno, and she is fine.

Summary
There was a cat hybrid in the corner of the cell, sprawled on the cold stones. His face was covered with dirt, his chest barely moving. He looked almost dead. His wrists were chained to the bars, Chris noticed. His thoughts were interrupted when the guide approached him.
“Oh, that one’s not up for adoption; he’s too sick. The vet will come by and take him down this afternoon.”
Chris gasped, turning slowly toward the man. He must have heard wrong.“Take... take him down?”
“Yeah. Like I said, he’s too sick. He’ll be dead in a week or two anyway, and we don’t want the others to get infected! Plus, it would be less painful for him, too. It’s really the best option for everyone.” The man said it so casually, like he was talking about the weather and not killing a person.
“I’ll take him. I’ll… I want to adopt this one.” The words jumped out of Chris’s mouth before he knew it.
Or
When Captain Chris Redfield goes to a hybrid shelter to help out his little sister, he somehow ends up adopting a sick traumatised cat hybrid.

Summary
Having a murderer for a father is enough to mess anyone up. Knowing that he'll probably kill you himself if you ever aren't useful enough to him to keep around, or if you ever try to expose him for his crimes, is one of a few things that can make that even worse.
Meeting Mike and Abby Schmidt is the beginning of the end, for Vanessa. Like everything else in her life, she doesn't realize until it's far too late.
(Or: a character study of Vanessa Shelly, starting long before the events of the movie and ending shortly after its conclusion.)
