When the initial investigation concludes and his superiors tell him to continue it in secret, he follows the advice of a friend to pretend that he is wooing this dangerous necromancer as a reason to keep visiting without raising his suspicion. This may or may not turn into genuine wooing, and said necromancer may or may not be quite amenable to this (lol of course he is), as is the cultivator.

He instantly turned his face away when he caught Xie Lian staring at him, the blush tinting his cheeks adding to his loveliness.
“Keep him forever, Xie Lian,” Shi Qingxuan sniffled.
Xie Lian pulled an arm free of his friend’s hold to touch the underside of Hua Cheng’s chin and steer his face back to his own.
“I plan to,” he said, holding Hua Cheng’s eye. He hummed with pleasure when Hua Cheng’s expression melted into sweet affection, and he kissed Xie Lian’s cheek.
