After what feels like hours, he finally makes it to the bottom floor and out the door, crashing into the smoggy street. He takes a deep breath, and starts walking. He needs to move, can’t even think about getting into a car without feeling claustrophobic. Maybe it will help him clear his head, shake off this discomfort. He tries not to think about how all this would be so much easier if he was dead. He isn’t supposed to think like that, he made a promise to Ratio, and he doesn't really mean it anyway. It would be nice, that’s all.

When Aventurine opens the door, Veritas can only think how terrible he looks. He's still in his nightclothes, his skin in two shades paler than normal, and his hair is uncharacteristically disheveled. His eyes are glassy and the bags under his eyes are far worse than normal.
“Oh. Why are you here?” Aventurine’s voice is gravely and nasally when he speaks.
Veritas pushes past him and heads for the kitchen. “You look horrible,” he says, shaking his head. “Jade told me you called in sick, and I was available. Now, sit down before you pass out.”

But it does not return to her, now a black speck on the warm, wavy horizon. Ruan Mei's head and arms both eclipse the two red suns of Umbraxis like an infant Aeon, born to breathe life into the lifeless.
When Ratio's mother comes back to life, he must solve the mystery of her resurrection while confronting the scars of his past.

“Hiya!” The little girl beams back at him, giving him a wave. He waves back and, feeling awkward looking up at them both, clambers to his feet.
She really looks a lot like Veritas—the same hair, the same eyes—the only difference being her much rounder features. She looks around seven or eight, which sticks out to him, considering Veritas doesn’t seem to be any older than his mid-twenties.
“Didn’t expect to see you here,” Veritas says, looking a little suspicious.
“I, uh, yeah, I live here.” Aventurine laughs nervously, gesturing to the door he’d been leaning against.
