Shane’s heart felt like it was going to beat out of his chest. Out of all the people he was telling about the fact that he was dating Ilya Rozanov, he was the most nervous about Hayden. After all, he was Shane’s best friend and a really important person in his life.
But surely Hayden would see reason when Shane explained, right? Yeah, Shane was certain; when Hayden saw how serious he was about this he would put his grudge against Ilya aside to support his friend. When Shane told him that it was love he would get it. He would understand!
Optimism can be a gift. It can also be a curse.

“Oh, c’mon! You don’t need a date night with Ilya. Without kids, every night can be date night. Jackie and I have been planning this outing for 3 weeks. I just forgot to call the babysitter until today, and now she is busy,” Hayden had that tone again. The one he used whenever talking about Ilya and Shane’s relationship. “Can’t you skip date night or move it to Montreal and take the kids with you?”
Shane wasn’t sure how to respond. His first thought was just to say ‘no’ outright, but he knew that would result in making Hayden mad at him. “How about Ilya and I check our schedules and try to come out to babysit next week? We have a few nights next week where we will be in Ottawa before we leave on the road for 4 games.”
Or Shane Hollander finally realizes Hayden is not a great friend.

Summary
Remember when Hayden Pike punches Ilya after Shane said not to, right before the announcement of the Irina Foundation? Remember that that was the second time Hayden laid his hands on Ilya in the first month of knowing him?
Or, Shane gets rightfully fed up after the first month of Hayden's behavior towards Ilya. Punching Ilya was the final straw, so he tells Hayden to pretend he never found out. It sets off a chain of events landing him, happily, in Ottawa a year earlier and with a better support system for both him and Ilya.
