Summary
Ryland doesn't know where he is, what he's doing, or why he's doing it. All he knows is that he's in a universe with no stars and that an organization called the COI found the Hail Mary spinning out into deep space. He knows that Rocky may be injured somewhere, and he knows that the man that currently lays in a hospital bed in front of him should be dead as dirt but has miraculously survived.
He knows he has been given an ultimatum. Find out what brought Simon back to life or never see Rocky again.
The task proves more complicated than he thought.

Summary
"Whoaaaa" Grace couldn't help but rush out, like a little kid seeing the museum for the first time. Endless fascination for everything he didn't understand as it was demonstrated right before his eyes.
Also like a little kid, Grace got antsy after the first few seconds.
"How long is this supposed to take?" Grace ignored how whiney he sounded as he asked. It didn't stop him from tacking on a childish; "Ugh!"
"Collector should be here soon," Rocky responded at the same time the impact of the collector's collision with the winch forced another sound out of Grace.
"Got it, its here!" Grace cheered, and he moved towards the winch now that the xenonite chain was no longer moving at approximately three times the speed of sound.
"Amaze! Amaze! Amaze!"
Something else hit the ship.

Summary
Simon was not a kind man. He wasn't a good person. He knew who the kindest person in his mind was, and it wasn't him.
Maybe that was why he resented them. Part of it, at least.
He resented them for being better than him. He resented them for being everything horrible he was too scared to own up to. He resented being a passenger whenever someone else stepped forward, and that whoever was supposed to be Simon had died a long time ago and he'd claimed the name as his own just so he could have one. Most of all, he resented that he was aware of it at all, but never enough to pin anything down.
Just enough to know something was deeply, irrevocably fucking wrong with him. Something Eden's Father had sniffed out when he was young. The C.O.I. had seen it in him, too. Everyone on Jeremiah, the prison station, avoided him- even the other Edenites. They knew what he was. In the end, even the Light had seen what he was. What they all were, no matter how carefully they delegated tasks to be safe from the guilt.
Butcher.
Grace didn't know what he was.
It scared the fuck out of him.

There were times after Rocky moved into the Hail Mary when Grace would be hunched over an experiment, struggling to make things work; struggling to find the solution that Tau Ceti held, then struggling to grow nitrogen-resistant Taumoeba faster. Sometimes he would sit staring at the farm-tanks, slouched in his chair with his hands dangling over his knees, and whisper to himself. “Please,” he would say. “Please, please, please.”
“Who is Grace talking to?” Rocky had asked in the stilted way he’d been stuck with at the time.
“No one,” Grace had shrugged. “Or anyone. Anyone who’ll listen.”
Rocky does not understand humans. But now, he sits on the shore of an infant sea, a brand-new constructed world all around him just waiting for its single lonely occupant to take control of it, and wonders if human senselessness is worth a shot.
“Please,” he whispers, running his claw through the water. “Please, please, please.”
The sea does not respond.
Or, what if your friend accidentally catches the attention of a god in hopes of saving you, and that god falls in love with you instead?
