    Summary

Another waitress places the gaudiest long island iced tea Jean ever did see in front of Harry. It’s a shade of blue so unnatural, it makes Jean wince.

“What the fuck? When did you even order that? And also why?”

    Harry shrugs.

“I think the bartenders have a bet going, honestly, I haven’t really ordered anything in weeks, the drinks just show up. Though they are usually more traditional, but hey, I swing both ways.” Harry says suggestively, dipping his head forward seductively and immediately poking himself in the eye with the bright purple plastic straw. “ Ow!”

“Aren’t cops supposed to have good to great motor skills?” Jean mocks.

“You don’t get the cop, you get me.”

    “There’s a big difference?”

“Massive.” Harry lies, not breaking eye contact, trying to blindly use his tongue to get his straw back into his mouth.

    Summary

    New Revachol, Current Century.

History is written by the victors and forgotten by everyone else. University kids put gaudy bras over the bust of Guillaume that decorates the entrance to the Bevy Pavillion of Arts and Communications. The Church has been fully consumed by the pale and Martinaise is now home to the first official Entroponetics National Park; complete with a Pale Visitor Center that features a gift shop. Young women are converting to Dolorianism thanks to a Pure Girl aesthetic trend. No one tosses centimes in the Heidelstam Square fountain anymore - but what's left to wish for?

Raphaël is new to the city after years of running, collecting menial jobs to make ends meet. Vincent H. Abadanaiz is trying not to get kicked out of his Master's programme.

What could their small, ordinary lives ever have to do with men who died over a hundred years ago?

    Summary

There was a quiet complicité between Mikael and Jean now. They were a team of two, exchanging long knowing looks whenever Trant droned on and on about some new health fad he heard about, or when he enthusiastically encouraged them to exercise their brain with a good book instead of watching a movie at night.

Jean had never really considered children. He hated being one and knew early on his chances of ending in a marriage with a woman were slim to none.

Things had changed considerably since then.

Now, coming home from a walk during which they got caught in the rain, watching Mikael toe off his shoes, and peeling his blazer off him, rambling about some stupid thing one of his friends did at school, Jean felt overwhelmed with fatherly love - with the desire to keep protecting Mikael, and helping him through life.

It was one of his meaningless little life’s favourite aspects, and an overall feeling that brought him close to tears sometimes, when he reflected upon it, in the quiet of his own bedroom.

    Summary

“There’s something wrong,” Orfeo says. He’s agitated, shifting his perch, beating his wings. “Where’s his daemon? I don’t sense it anywhere.”
Kim says, “Detective, where’s your daemon?”
The detective frowns, finally averting his gaze from Orfeo to Kim. His eyes, when fixed on Kim, are a direct and blazing green, made greener by the redness of the whites. Kim does not react at all, but it is a very close thing. “My what?”
And that’s how Kim discovers the detective from the 41st has lost his daemon.
