    Summary

“God, I’m horrified, Bruce. I can’t close my eyes without thinking about it, without seeing you—“ His hands stay half-lifted, as if to ward off the memory. His chest heaves, eyes darting away, unwilling or unable to meet Bruce’s gaze fully. “You looked so afraid of me.”

And how can Bruce possibly admit to Clark that he was without Clark twisting it into fuel for more self loathing? That feeling his own painfully human fragility frightened him more than he imagined it could; that the knowledge he allowed someone with the power to kill him in seconds this close, every single day, ran counter to everything he had ever stood for, everything he had built himself upon, without Clark hearing regret in every word?

    “It wasn’t you.”

”It was my hands.” Clark’s voice cracks.

    Summary

Clark heard it just as he stepped out the front entrance of The Daily Planet’s building. The sun had already set, a chilly autumn breeze dragging through his coat. It had been a late evening for him, catching up on drafts for his next few articles before some other emergency stole his attention from his work.

    “Kal-el.”

He straightened, perking towards Gotham. Something cold gripped his heart as he listened for that familiar heartbeat. The voice was unmistakable; low, rough, and steady, one that grounded Clark almost as quick as Ma’s. In battle, hearing it usually meant there was a plan, that Clark could worry a little less about details; because the man he trusted the most – with his life and the lives of his family – had it under control. It soothed Clark when he faltered, bolstered him when his strength wavered, and steadied him when he teetered on the edge of sensory madness.

    And that voice sounded afraid.

Clark was suited up and hurtling through the air towards Gotham before Bruce whispered again.

“Kal–” came his quiet gasp. “I’m sorry.”

    Summary

Clark, of course, knew that Bruce Wayne had been studying at Metropolis University. The billionaire was all anyone could talk about when he first got accepted.

Except for Clark. He'd actually counted himself lucky to never run into the guy. From the sounds of it, Bruce was just another rich kid with a superiority complex.

    Summary

Bruce skidded to a halt, breath hissing through his teeth.

Superman’s head came up sharply, like the sound of Bruce’s shock still meant something to him—and it was Clark, but he was different. Different lines on his face, a subtly different curl to his hair, and as he looked Bruce up and down his eyes blew wide.

Bruce’s hand dropped immediately to his belt, a chill sweeping through him. “Not our Kal.”
    --
Bruce and Clark have been in a relationship since the founding of the Justice League almost twenty years ago. When the League tries to bring in a thief with stolen reality-shifting technology, Clark is accidentally exchanged with his counterpart from a universe that's almost identical—except he's married to Lois. And they have a son.

As each side scrambles to swap their Clarks back, Bruce and Clark find themselves grappling with new questions about their life together, faced with the possibility of things having gone differently for not just the two of them, but their children—the ones they have, and the one they've never met. Along the way, they do their best not to to blow up their counterparts' lives by dredging up any long-buried feelings. (They may or may not succeed at that last.)

    Summary

    Interest compounds.

Clark goes dark for seventy-two hours. Bruce runs models. Alfred makes eggs for two and miscounts.

The knives thread gets resolved. Not the way Bruce planned.

Direct sequel to Payment Due. Best read in order — this one pays out on everything the first two set up, and the return is proportional to the investment.
