Alice's headphones clatter to the floor, making a slight thump on the ground, her hands falling open.
She inhales sharply, as shock races up her spine. Horror follows quickly after, a sludgy mix crawling its way up from her stomach and right into her throat.
The voice is dry, gruff, and matter-of-fact. It weaves its way across the room and into her ears, burrowing into her brain. It’s unmistakable—Alice would be able to recognize it even if she hadn’t been constantly thinking of its source. She’s heard it over drinks at “divorce parties”, moping about in the corner, under the desk as it grumbles about Lena not knowing anything about how proper maintenance worked, from through the phone as panic crackled through it on a night she wishes she could forget.
