Yes I know this is late for an Arcane fic but I started this just for myself in 2020, I thought long term maybe I would publish a year or two later when it was finished. After 6 years with no end in sight I decided that I just need to get it out there and que sera sera. (PSA that I have never actually studied criminal psychology so the details about how it's done might be a little fuzzy, also the chapter lengths will vary a lot sorry.)

Jess, who was currently crouching in the grass next to the flat tire of Bev’s car and showing Esti how to use a tire iron. Jess, who had somehow known exactly what to do to get Lupe and Esti to talk it out and did it. Jess, who cared about Lupe like no one had ever cared about her, who listened to her, who saw her.
Fuck.
OR
Lupe really didn’t mean to fall in love with Jess. Jess knew she’d fall in love with Lupe from the start.

Jess feels like themself when they’re with Lupe. When it’s just Lupe in front of the frozen pizza at the grocery store, against the bar with a joint between her fingers, or in her T-shirt at the hotel, soft and wet from the shower.

Lupe is biting her nail now. Still avoiding Jess’ eyes. Her shoulders are hunched close to her ears. Jess can’t help but think the orange fabric of Lupe’s shirt brings out the copper tint in her eyes.
I don’t like men.
“Then what do you like?”
The heat of Lupe’s hip feels like a sear at Jess’ side. Like a cattle brand. I belong here.

Summary
It’s too subtle for anyone else to see. But Jess isn’t human either. Something about the way Lupe throws the ball is a little too good, like Lupe is just barely restraining from perfect.
Also, the baseball cracks a little when it hits the fence. Jess hears it happen and sees the corner of Lupe’s mouth curve up, ever so slightly. Lupe’s teeth are brilliant white, and her canines a little elongated. Those fangs peek over her lip.
Jess startles. She gets it if no one else does. But she shakes her head, and under her breath, says “Fucking vampires.”
