Excerpt:
A second bird incident: that’s what does it, in the end.
Their neighbor’s cat –- a hideously flat-faced, smooth-brained creature with big, dopey eyes to match -– had successfully hunted another bird for sport, and now that it had celebrated its victory, it promptly left the scene of the crime.
Naturally, Phil had intervened. Nature takes its course, yes, but this was just senseless cruelty. Of course he’d chased it off. The damn thing was only acting on instinct, but still, Phil couldn’t help the spike of indignation he felt in doing so. His heart physically ached at the sight of the creature on their patio, hobbling around as it was too hurt to fly.
There was only one thing for it.
“Dan!?”

He looks like he does on screen, black emo hair a little like a very attractive bird’s nest, with yellow-checkered cat ears on his head, but unmistakably Phil. Dan is shocked, genuinely, that not everyone here falls head over heels for this man immediately. Surely they must. Surely they’re just doing a better job than Dan is at keeping it in. Maybe he’s not gay, maybe this is just what Phil does to people.
“Hi,” Phil says. “You’ve got nice whiskers.”

Phil stays quiet, his lips pressed together, until they’re all sat in their living room, Dan next to Phil on the sofa with far more space between them than they usually have, looking around helplessly.
“Just what exactly do you remember?” he asks Dan.
“Uh,” makes Dan. “I know my name is Dan. They told me.”
Dan has a ski accident and loses his memory. Phil can't do anything but offer him a home - Dan finds that said home is quite obscure.

or: phil’s life is a tv show, and he’s the only one who doesn’t know. dan—actor, fan, hot for a badly dressed bottle blond—auditions for a leading role. this goes about as well as dan howell + reality tv stardom could possibly go.
