Summary
The nightmare began when Crowley woke up in Hell.
To most people that would seem like an expected place for a nightmare to start, but to Crowley, even with all its various trappings, Hell was mostly just a place.
“We have a new assignment for you, Crowley,” Beelzebub says. There’s an ominous hum in their voice. For the first time in many eons it sends a shiver down Crowley’s spine. “Directly from the top. We think you’ll find it interezzzting.”
Beelzebub snaps and then they’re gone.
In their place is an angel. Not just any angel.
In their place is Aziraphale.

Summary
Crowley knows this story. He's been down this road before. Hell knows what it wants, and it's going to get it, taken one ounce at a time. The apocalypse was avoided, but he'll die down here anyway at the hands of Hell's most vengeful.
He thought he knew this story. Except this time help comes from an unexpected quarter.

Summary
He keeps an eye on the demon’s sleeping form, enough so that when he begins to stir he’s ready. He’s tensed and ready for action even though all the demon does at first is groan tiredly. If Aziraphale couldn’t still sense his aura he’d doubt that this was a demon at all… but then his eyes open.
His eyes burn amber, thin slits through the center. Clearly not human. Clearly demonic. It makes Aziraphale’s breath catch in his throat.
“Where… are you an angel?” The demon’s voice is scratchy and weak. It looks like he’s trying to sneer but it falls flat. “Did you kidnap me?"

Summary
When Aziraphale first realized there was something strange going on he thought he could handle it himself. Handling problems before others could notice was just the way it was done. To expect otherwise was unthinkable, ridiculous. It was manageable. It always was. After all, he dealt with the apocalypse well enough. There can’t be much worse than that.
He never really thought of mentioning it to Crowley. He had it handled. It wasn’t until he was opening the strange book that he thought of Crowley at all. It was the first shock of magic that made him think of him, and then it was too late. By the time he felt the first spark all Aziraphale thought of was Crowley, sharp and clear in his mind, as the book opened a conduit directly down to Hell. All he thought about was Crowley as he felt the boundaries of his body fade, a demon taking hold of his vacated vessel, and with distant finality he watched a demon stretch his limbs in his body.

Summary
"First," said Gale. "Do not kill any thinking creatures in Waterdeep unless you must to protect yourself or you have my express permission."
As Gale spoke, he could feel the weight of his words sinking into the person sitting across from him. It was like casting a spell, but took no effort. Astarion had been staring hollowly into his goblet of blood, but at this he made a faintly interested noise. As if the rule were novel and he was considering the shape of it.
"Second, you will obey me in all things," said Gale. There didn't feel like there was any honest way of softening that. Astarion didn't make any sound at all.
"Third, do not leave the tower without permission." Astarion made another speculative noise, considering this one too. But then his shoulders hunched and his eyes skittered down, as if he didn't want to look at what was about to happen.
"Fourth," Gale said, and paused. He started with some context: "There is a tressym upstairs."
Astarion's head twitched. He looked up at Gale, blinking, startled. He had the air of someone who had been bracing for a blow and instead had just been handed a balloon animal.
"A what?" he asked.

Summary
Karlach smiles at him as the sun begins to set, her eyes softening around the corners, a nervous look flickering over her features. And Astarion is already expecting what comes next, but it still feels like shards of ice blooming behind his ribs.
“Do you think I can sleep in your tent tonight? Now that I can’t hurt you or set the damn thing on fire.” She asks with a breathy chuckle, an uncharacteristic anxiety making her shift on her feet, her bottom lip caught under her teeth. He has no disillusions on what her words could mean. She’s not likely looking to do much sleeping when she is free to touch him now.
(Or, Karlach can freely touch the people she loves now. Astarion makes a few wrong assumptions.)

Summary
Meditation is not sleep, and reverie is not quite dreaming. Fever can shunt humans into a horrible half-sleep. Elves, instead, get one foot caught in memory.
