“Why are you doing this?” Sarah glares at her. She feels her shoulder begin to tingle, then burn ever so slightly where the opaque hand touches her. It’s not painful, but it causes a spike of panic to flash through Sarah.
Her sister smiles and, as if it’s the most obvious thing in the world, she says, “For your reclamation, of course.”

It’s apparent the cell is made for two people, but the space is so minimally decorated that Enid had assumed she was the only inhabitant. And evidently, there is no cellmate present.
“Where is she?” Enid asks, now noting the stack of books on one of the desks.
“In solitary.”
She’s afraid to ask, but the guard’s gradual shift in tone—strict and no nonsense, to almost hesitant—and her own undying curiosity get the better of her.
“What for?”
“Strangling a guard with her braid. She was quite unhappy to hear that she has a new bunkmate.”
Or, in which, Enid’s stint in prison with a notorious cellmate is challenging—until it’s not.

Rio snaps her eyes open, scanning the deck rapidly. It doesn’t take her long to spot the figure she’s looking for, it never does. It’s not like looking for a needle in a haystack; it’s like looking for a dagger amongst butter knives—something your hand has touched, that you intimately know the shape of, sticking out boldly among the bland and uninteresting.
Agatha Harkness walks across the upper deck of the RMS Titanic the same way she walked a crooked path in the forest, the same way she walked through colonial mansions that she stole from unassuming generals, the same way she walked into Rio’s world those few centuries ago; like she owns it.

Pulling the sheet to her, Agatha gets up, draws a hand through her hair. “Get up,” she says, loudly.
The woman – Rio, if Agatha remembers correctly, Jesus fucking Christ – only mumbles something in response and turns over, away from the noise. On her back, right below her neck, the black tendrils of a tattoo spiral across her shoulder blades.
Agatha’s too fucking old for this. “Get up,” she repeats. She’s been teaching for over twenty years; she knows how to make her voice carry in a room.
