Buck couldn’t remain here alone with all his racing thoughts. Catastrophizing. That’s what his therapist called it. He had to move. He continued trying to dig his way with his good hand, but the way the rocks had fallen, if he removed one, another took its place. It was like he was inside an hourglass.
But he wouldn’t give up.
There. Was he hearing things? A scraping sound.
His adrenaline spiked. He pawed at the rocks again, because noise meant movement and movement meant—
“Buck?”
“Eddie?” Buck rasped.
He was alive! Eddie was alive.
(Or Buck and Eddie get trapped in a cave-in and things go from bad to worse.)

“I was… I was supposed to be finding my joy.”
“Did it work?” Buck asks.
“That was the start of it, took a while… but… I found it now.” He loosely wraps a hand around Buck’s wrist, holding on.
“That’s good, that’s really good, buddy.”
“It’s been really good, I’ve been so good,” Eddie continues, “So it’s okay.”
Oh– Buck’s breath hitches. He thinks he’s going to die.
“I’ve made my peace with it.” Eddie nods ever so slightly. “I got to be happy for a while.”
“Stop that. You can be happy for the rest of your life, Eddie.” Buck moves his hand from where it cradles Eddie’s head, to his pulse point where he holds his fingers to feel the thready beating, then cards them through Eddie’s hair again. “The rest of your long life, because we’re getting out of here. Together.”
“Together…” Eddie mumbles, smiling slightly, “Together would be nice.”
Or, Buck finds Eddie in the elevator.

“I— I should get out of your hair,” he says.
Eddie turns to look at him, the movement sharp. There’s a look on his face that looks like he thinks Buck might have lost his entire mind.
“Did you hit your head on something?” he asks drily, like he knows that Buck didn’t. Buck hesitates anyway.
“Uh,” he says ineloquently. “I don’t think so.”
“Then why are you saying things that don’t make any sense?”
in other words, the diaz boys take buck home with them after the tsunami.

Eddie slides his key in and twists the knob, letting himself in, and the warmth surrounding the hall in contrast to the cold weather outside greets him, easing his nerves in an instant.
On one end of the couch, Buck is fast asleep, sunken deep into the cushions with his head resting against the backrest, his hands in his hoodie's pockets and face slack, curls sticking out freely.
He leans in and brushes his lips over Buck's forehead, but his face drops in a slightly confused frown when the skin underneath his lips feels a little warm.
Huh. Weird.
