Their Longhouse usually smelt like a thousand different things, a stew always simmered on the hearth for weary travelers to fill their bellies, the scent of steel from their sharpened blades, the fragrant tang of Tekla’s mead seeped into the rugs beneath their boots and the musk of sweat that always seemed to linger. But this smell was like none of those, this scent was heavy, acrid, a sickly sweet smelling odor that tickled Eivors nose and made her want to vomit. She knew this heady smell well, it was the scent that burning wooden homes made, the odor of battle and the ransacking of a village.
Her home was alight.
