    Jason lay sprawled on the floor of his apartment, his body betraying him with every shallow breath. He didn’t know what was happening, only that his system was failing, shutting down piece by piece, like his body had finally decided to give up on him. Tears burned his eyes as he cried, helpless, the sound swallowed by the silence of the room.
    Anger twisted inside him, sharp as the wounds themselves. He hated himself for being so stubborn, for refusing to ask for help when he’d needed it most. Why couldn’t he have swallowed his pride? Why did he always push everyone away?
    The helplessness was familiar, too familiar. It dragged him back to that warehouse floor years ago, the cold concrete beneath him, the certainty of death pressing down. He wanted to scream, to rage against it, but he couldn’t — because deep down he knew this feeling. He was going to die.
