Summary
Will Byers moves away after graduation, going to college in New York with Jonathan, leaving Hawkins, Indiana and everything that came with it as a bleak memory (and occasional nightmare). Mike Wheeler can't bring himself to do the same. Mike writes stories about the entire party constantly, but he writes about El more. He writes about Will as much as he breathes.
Will and Mike had silently agreed to go no-contact right before Will left, one long look accompanied by silence being all they needed to know that this might be the end for them.
Will Byers doesn't find it too hard to move on enough to talk to other people, to fill in blanks. But what he does find hard, is finding someone he can really talk to. Nobody he meets will ever understand what happened to him in Hawkins from 1983 to 1987, nobody tangible at least. Mike decides Christmas would be a good time to break their no contact, calling Will nonstop and inviting him to a new year's party, one last trip to Hawkins, one more meetup.Bookmarked by Thatonesimp030

Mike sits back on his heels, watching Will as he calms himself down. Mike doesn't say anything, doesn't reach out to touch him again, just watches, takes in Will's side profile. The curve of his nose, the cut of his jaw. Will is pretty. It's an odd thought, but not a new one. One of the first things Mike ever thought about Will was how pretty he is. Mike saw him, sitting alone and small on the swings. Mike approached him, asked him to be his friend, and Will looked up at him and said yes. He'd smiled at Mike, small and soft and beautiful. Mike had immediately thought Will was the most beautiful person he'd ever seen. Even more than his mama, which was high praise from five-year-old Mike Wheeler.

"It's not just anything." Mike turned to look at him, and they were suddenly very close, close enough that Will could see the darker flecks in Mike's eyes, could count his freckles if he wanted to. "You're incredible. You know that, right?"
Will couldn't breathe. Couldn't think. Could only stare at Mike's face inches from his own and try to remember why leaning forward would be a terrible idea.
Mike's eyes dropped to Will's mouth for just a second. Maybe it wasn't so terrible of an idea. It would be so easy... to reach out and touch.
Then Mike was pulling back, clearing his throat, looking flustered. "Anyway. Um. Should we-"
What happened in those 18 months in the Wheeler house between S4 and S5 that made Will so hopeful... or, as the kids call it, MWTFDYD Gate.
