Summary
“Oh, Vincent,” Bellini laughs with genuine mirth, if not warmth. “The curia may be a wasp’s nest, but we aren’t a pack of lemmings. No one is competing for that poisoned chalice. Even Thomas would merely accept it. He would accept anything, from your hand. But you’d never do such a thing to him.”
“But you think I’d do it to you.” Vincent smiles. “Aldo, nobody is going to be sacrificed. Not in this century. Not if I can help it.”

Summary
All those first nights, and weeks, and months of Dracula pounding away promising to put a baby in him while he quailed, he’d thought that this one threat, at least, was empty. Now, he knows it is only that his belly proved barren.
But his seed, it seems, is strong.

Summary
How Tozer likes to play the ruined maiden, the barbered Samson; uniquely betrayed, as though betrayal weren’t the natural state of the world and fair play rare as a straight line in the wilderness. He’s hardly the worst thing Hickey’s ever done, but he’s somehow the one that’s stuck, all those greater sins having been blown away by arctic winds—so much for moral gravity!—to the realm of nightmare and hearsay and learned men’s foolish opinions in newspapers. So it’s only natural to poke at him occasionally, like a scab. And it’s warm, the feeling that bleeds into Hickey’s heart at the clench of Tozer’s fists around his wrists.
