It stared her in the face, inescapable. The ever-moving hachimaki headband laid motionless on the floor, along with its bearer.
Beneath her feet, a hole opened in the floor. The lower decks cleared a path for her to plummet further and further through dining rooms and cabins and machinery until finally she plunged into the ocean. The frigid water blinded and numbed her, the rushing of water or of blood in her ears deafened. Her chest burned for air, but she refused to take a breath in. She closed her eyes against the burning salt, willing the world to go away.

He faltered, “I–,” before sighing, the mask fully sliding off. “Yes. I visited Kristoph. Now that you’ve satisfied your curiosity, Fräulein, would you kindly move along?”
She wanted to do that, truly she did… but the look in his eyes was all too familiar. She’d seen that hurt, betrayal, and disillusionment plain on her own face in the mirror nine years ago. “You know what, Gavin?” she cursed herself for saying it, even as she spoke, “Let’s go get a drink.”

Eventually, he'll find his mentor's limits and break them, as long as he doesn't break himself first. (Or: Kazuma gets sent to anger management while van Zieks figures out what to do with him.)
