And isn’t that what life was? Isn’t that something her mother taught her? That life, war, was all about chances? That you had to have the courage to stand up and take the chances when they came, to keep moving forward for a chance at something better?

Summary
Just as he began lowering the tip of the rifle, another explosion sounded nearby. The children screamed and Celeste had crouched, bracing for any debris. When none came she stood back up. And she knew.
The man had a wild look in his eyes, he held one of the children roughly by their arm, the rifle, unwieldy at close range but still deadly, against their head. The little girl was crying loudly now, scared from the explosion and from being grabbed and held at gunpoint.
“Turn around!” He demanded.
“I can’t do that.” She shook her head sadly. The moment she turned, he’d shoot her in the back and the children would have no one.
“Turn. Around.” He repeated his order, firm and demanding.
“Over here!” She heard Graye’s voice over the crashing water. And so did the gunman.
She saw, in slow motion, as the gunman realized backup had arrived and he had no way out now. A look of resignation crossed his face and the muscles in his arm flexed as he began to pull the trigger.

Summary
After overhearing Celeste's mother fearlessly standing up to the Fabricator General (one of the scariest, and most powerful entities in their government), Graye compares Celeste to her parents and just cant see how his sweet, curious, soft, girlfriend could possibly be from the same family.
Months later, after seeing Celeste try to save the life of a terrorist, but be forced to end him anyway after they attempt to harm a child, he could see how she might be related to them. But now he has to consider: if she could be so different on the surface, but so like them deep down, what does that mean for him and his estranged parents who gave him away because he wasn't good enough for them?

It’s not, as far as Cody knows, something most sapients do. Or any other sapients do, maybe. On Kamino, they can’t have jewellery, or ink, or paint. Always felt like the logical endpoint, the scarring. From his brief exposure to the rest of the galaxy, he’s gathered most people see it as extreme – It is extreme. They don’t have any alternatives.
